Going to BIO next week? Be sure to connect with Zoomedia during the conference!

BIO is always a challenge with so much going on from sessions to partnering meetings, networking events and the inevitable parties! With so much to choose from making a plan in advance is critical. I've been using the MyBIO event planner to search the program and add sessions I am interested in. While there seem to be few
marketing or communications panels there are many topics of interest and hopefully some valuable insights. The MyBio planner also gives you an idea of which sessions are most popular allowing you to avoid the overcrowded or the dead ducks :)

Here is a selection that made it into my plan so far:

Monday 27th
Partnering for Global Health
http://www.bio.org/pgh/
Keynote by Francis Collins
Note: If you are a non-profit and you register for the Partnering for Global Health Forum you get free registration for partnering at the BIO Business Forum.

The Effect of a More Risk Averse Environment on Licensing Deals (Session ID: 174)
Stock-in-trade discussion of current business development environment. I chose this one over others based on who is presenting and who is attending.

Disco Inferno – Pharma Feels the Heat With Discovery Deals (Session ID: 190)
I hope they have a glitter ball! A look at the R&D partnering environment with AZ and 4 biotechs and Luke Timmerman from Xconomy as moderator

If the disco fizzles out, I will be "moving on up" with royalty at the Belgium Funding Initiatives Boosting Biotech R&D with H.R.H. Prince Philippe in attendance. I am helping TVG plan a major new event in Brussels in 2012 so getting in with the Prince is on my agenda :)

Early evening receptions include Women in Bio, Morgan Lewis, and Rendez-vous Quebec and then it's off to the Newseum for the opening reception. Hope to get a look at their permanent exhibit of pieces of the Berlin Wall http://www.newseum.org/exhibits-and-theaters/permanent-exhibits/berlin-wall/index.html and then I'll be off to the Bayer Berlin-Brandenburg night at the W...

Tuesday 28th
Day two starts with double expressos and then a day of panels and industry predictions from Burrill and E&Y. Oh and who could resist "helpful and inspirational insights" at lunch with Tony Blair??

The Rare Disease panel in the afternoon will be interesting with many investors and pharma seeing Rare Disease products as a safer bet for approval than oncology or obesity candidates. Also personal fav Michael French on the changing bus dev world and Francis Collins on Innovation:

  • How Will We Afford Personalized Medicines? (Session ID 101)
  • The Partnering Conundrum: To Partner or Not to Partner, That Is the Question (Session ID: 176)
  • Ernst & Young’s 25th Annual Biotechnology Industry Report (Session ID: 274)
  • Navigating New Trends in the Industry: How Pharma and Biotech Companies in Rare Diseases are Shaping the Future (Session ID: 191)
  • Burrill State-of-the-Industry Report (Session ID: 8)
  • The Changing BD Environment: Overcoming Our Past to Succeed in the Future (Session ID: 188)
  • It Takes a Village - The Biotechnology Innovation Ecosystem (Session ID:7)

The Exhibit Hall opens on Tuesday morning too so I'll be taking a walk around and visiting clients and partners pavilions including the patient and advocacy display that includes 34 leading non-profits who fund critical research and advocacy programs.

Wednesday 29th
Wednesday I will be focused on the progress of companion diagnostics and regulatory and policy topics including FDA and EMA Town Hall and Tom Daschle, Howard Dean and Karl Rove duke it out on healthcare reform. My dance card includes:

  • Accelerating the Search for Cures: A New Paradigm
  • Secrets of the Big Pharma Dealmaker
  • Strategic Commercialization for Molecular Diagnostic Tests
  • Diagnostics and Personalized Medicine Track
  • EMA/FDA Town Hall

Good luck out there and email, call or txt if you would like to meet in DC.
