Zoomedia Hosting and IT Services

Zoomedia provides several hosting options including shared, dedicated, and streaming media servers. Back-up and mirroring options are also available. Our servers are co-located at 365Main in San Francisco, CA. The 365Main network operations center maintains 24/7/365 Internet connectivity through two connection entry vaults into the building property, currently supporting thousands of strands of fiber-optic cable. They also provide secured space in telco-grade 19" cabinets, with CCTV monitoring 24/7/365 by both hidden & visible CCTV systems in all essential perimeter and interior areas. Backup power is maintained by ten 2.1 megawatt Hitec Continuous Power Systems units on-website, identical to power backup systems utilized by the U.S. Department of Treasury, and NATO Radar Silo installations. WiLine provides network access and bandwidth to Zoomedia.

Security & Building Notes

  • Building base will absorb all movement in case of an earthquake - the building itself will not move. Only 5 buildings in San Francisco have this base
  • Break-away concrete; the building can move 12 inches laterally without building damage
  • Build on solid bedrock, not on landfill like other areas of SF
  • The "Probable Maximum Loss (PML)" for the building is 2.5%. All insurance companies use this in their ratings. Most new buildings are at 20%
  • Structure was built in the 1940s for the US Military. It was reconstructed in 1999-2000 with $130 million in improvements, $30 million of which is specifically for earthquake control
  • Access by identification only

Zoomedia Server Infrastructure

Zoomedia servers are co-located at 365 Main (www.365main.com) located in San Francisco, California. The 365 Main facility is a robust, reliable and secure environment, with state-of-the-art equipment, policies and procedures. 365 Main Network Operation Centers provide management support 24x7x365 to respond to disasters, ensure uptime, and provide business continuity for Zoomedia clients.

Shared Server Access

Client will not have direct external access to shared servers except through the functionality provided by the Zoomedia Content Management System (CMS). This restriction includes common applications such as FTP and SSH. External access to Zoomedia servers is restricted for security purposes. Shared servers are protected with an enterprise level firewall at 365 Main, our collocation facility. Should Client need to add content to their shared site, Client will contact either the project manager or webmaster to have content uploaded to the server. Shared Zoomedia servers are supported by daily back-up and conditioned, regulated line power with generator backup, and “24/7/365” monitoring of server systems to promote high availability for the website.

Who Provides the Hosting Platform and Where is it Located?

365 Main, San Francisco. Visits to the facility can be arranged through Zoomedia. Zoomedia completed an infrastructure upgrade and transferred services to 365Main in 2006. We have no plans to change providers at this time.

What Redundant Systems are in Place?

All Zoomedia servers are supported by regular back-up procedures for data and files. Hardware availability is supported by regulated line power with generator backup, while “24/7/365” monitoring of server systems are in place to promote high availability for the website.

Zoomedia maintains mirror servers for each of its live servers, including databases. Servers are monitored by two separate systems:

  • A Nagios based service provides continuous monitoring of server and network health internal to the Zoomedia network on a continuous basis. Alerts for identified issues are sent via email to internal staff.
  • @Watch external service is used for monitoring the network from an outside environment, specifically approximating the wider user experience. Alerts for detected issues are sent via email and SMS Text to Zoomedia IT Staff as well as select Client Services staff.

What is the Fail Over Process?

Zoomedia maintains mirror servers for each of its live servers, including databases. Servers are monitored by two separate systems, one internal and one external. On receiving an alert, Zoomedia personnel will diagnose the issue and will promote mirrors as necessary. Site files are backed up every two hours, and separate daily snapshots are copied to tape. The tapes are rotated to a secure offsite storage facility on a weekly basis and are maintained for up to six weeks. Offsite live mirrors can be provided on an as-needed basis.

Is There 24/7 Support?

Yes, both webmaster and IT support are available 24/7 Who is responsible for server security? Zoomedia IT

How is Spike Load and Bandwidth Utilization Managed?

Depending on the size and duration of the expected spike Zoomedia can utilize an array of measures, starting with file and memory based caching mechanisms, utilization of robust CDN's, and deployment on cloud based technologies, such as the Amazon Elastic Cloud.

What is the Hosting Facilities Typical Spike and Bandwidth Utilization?

The maximum record spike in our hosting is just over 3.5Mb/sec

How is DNS Handled?

Zoomedia maintains two dedicated DNS servers, however, most of our clients opt to handle their own DNS, and point A records for their domain to Zoomedia IP addresses.

What is the CMS Engine? Is it Proprietary?

The Zoomedia CMS is built with open source technologies but the CMS itself is proprietary. The Zoomedia CMS is built on an Open Source, LAMPP platform, utilizing the following component technologies:

  • PHP5 for an easily maintained web-based interface
  • Apache 2 web server, including a suite of mod_auth modules to provide security integration at the web server level MySQL Server 5, for data storage and access
  • PEAR Database library is utilized for its data abstraction, enabling integration with a wide range of databases
  • htDig is used for search functionality including indexing of content of key document formats through the wv suite of parsers; DOC, XLS, PDF, and PPT

In addition to the built-in set of tools included with the Zoomedia CMS, there exists a wide library of customized modules to handle common tasks such as contacts, events and calendars, multi-lingual publishing, document management, product pipeline display, Flash content management and built-in Google analytics.

Will the CMS Engine be Updated Regularly, and if so, at What Cost/Impact?

Yes, Zoomedia provides both new tools and system-wide upgrades periodically. System-wide upgrades are automatically included for clients who are paying licensing fees for the system or who are using Zoomedia webmaster services on a shared server. New tools are optional and may require additional licensing fees.

Is the CMS Part of the Website? Is it Portable?

The website can be extracted from the CMS as a flat HTML site. Database functionality (submission forms for careers, IR, the search function, etc.) will be impeded. What is the typical database utilized for new site deployments? MySQL Server 5, for data storage and access. PEAR Database library is utilized for its data abstraction, enabling integration with a wide range of databases

How is CMS Client Content Secured?

The Zoomedia CMS is a password-protected web-based content management system. Each hosted website consists of the public website and a password protected development site (to provide protection against unpublished content from being viewed or indexed by spiders). Further, access to the databases where the content is stored is available only through private IP addresses, accessed via a VPN available only to Zoomedia employees.
