It's afternoon of the 3rd day at JP Morgan Healthcare and things have slowed down - an earlier notable slow down than in previous years. Last night saw myriad events and smaller mini-conferences in nearby hotel suites and galleries, and the annual Rodman Renshaw late night party for those who could still walk in their heels :) I attended the Phase 3 Australian biotechnology investor forum put together by Blueprint Life Science Group and AusBiotech and was impressed if somewhat bamboozled by 10 company presentations in 45 minutes!
In an unusual start to his presentation, which has come to be expected from Josh Boger, the Vertex CEO played a video with a rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring the companies he admires most for their groundbreaking contributions to science and patients...

Following on the heels of Josh Boger's Vertex presentation came Art Levinson, CEO of Genentech. There has been much speculation about Roche and Genentech deal going down at this conference but Art had something else he wanted to point out to JP Morgan - he pointed out the error in JP Morgan's DNA image used prolifically in the conference collateral - JP Morgan's DNA helix does not exist in nature!

Next week, we'll see the annual massing of black suits around Union Square in San Francisco as the JP Morgan 27th Annual Healthcare Conference kicks off the year at the St. Francis hotel. With 300 companies and 3,500 investors invited, and many more in attendance, the conference traditionally sets the tone for the year's deal making and will certainly be an interesting bellwether for 2009.
