Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Posted by Barbara Lavery on June 12, 2008 at 8:54 am

Last night FDA Commissioner Andrew Von Eschenbach escaped the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes by coming to California - one of the few States this week where the tomatoes are healthy. The Commissioner was here to meet with Google Health and in the evening spoke to members of the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on his "Blueprint for Change".

This was in the middle of a week when the WSJ reported a brain drain from the FDA to more lucrative corporate jobs, the administration finally recognized that the agency needed an immediate infusion of $275 million beyond the president’s budget request to ensure that imported food, drugs and medical devices were safe and asked Congress for it, Congress pledged or perhaps teased with a promise of 275 million in funding for the agency, while farmers reeled from an attack of salmonella on their tomato sales that's costing them their livelihood.

The tomato attack became a blizzard of paper as people waved their questions for the Commissioner. Questions were sorted, grouped and presented by Donald Kennedy, PhD a former FDA Commissioner himself.

The audio recording of the Commissioner's visit to the Commonwealth Club is available here: Andrew Von Eschenbach: FDA Blueprint for Change
