In an unusual start to his presentation, which has come to be expected from Josh Boger, the Vertex CEO played a video with a rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring the companies he admires most for their groundbreaking contributions to science and patients - Merck, Gilead, and Genentech.
He continued by saying that even in these times it is possible to build breakthrough drugs, quoting from George Merck "Medicine is for the people, not for the profits. The profits follow, and if we have remembered that, they have never failed to appear. The better we have remembered it, the larger they have been."
Boger commented that the inspiration of these best companies allows Vertex to aspire to earn the right to be one of these great companies.
Boger then continued into his presentation highlighting Vertex Hep C and CF drugs currently in clinical trials and moving successfully into Phase 3 in 2009.
Wrapping up, Boger reiterated Vertex' ability to make tough choices, to navigate through tough times, and the company's commitment to patients - developing transforming new therapies like telaprevir for hepatitis C and VX-809 for Cystic Fibrosis.
