This past weekend saw the inaugural launch of BIL:PIL in San Diego, a two day healthcare innovation conference following TEDMED. The first question people tend to ask is actually not about healthcare at all, but rather, who's Bil? Those of us who were around in the late 80s usually get the tongue-in-cheek reference to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," and, not surprisingly, it is that same spirit of wacky innovation that you find at the BIL gatherings.

Each year, the day before the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco, a grassroots "unconference" is held called HealthCamp. Topics focus on healthcare innovation and content is entirely user-generated on the spot by participants. This was my first year as a lead organizer and did I ever learn a lot in the process!
As social media approaches adolescence, its hallmark of “spontaneous user generated content” has spread into all kinds of seemingly unconventional places, like the world of conferences. In the Web 2.0 world, a conference is now called an “UNconference”.

Don't plan a trip to the Waldorf Astoria next week unless you are into healthcare and biotech or have a penchant for fighting your way through a sea of bankers and anxious CEOs. Both the UBS Healthcare Services conference and the annual BIO CEO meeting will descend on New York on Sunday 8th through mid-week.

It's afternoon of the 3rd day at JP Morgan Healthcare and things have slowed down - an earlier notable slow down than in previous years. Last night saw myriad events and smaller mini-conferences in nearby hotel suites and galleries, and the annual Rodman Renshaw late night party for those who could still walk in their heels :) I attended the Phase 3 Australian biotechnology investor forum put together by Blueprint Life Science Group and AusBiotech and was impressed if somewhat bamboozled by 10 company presentations in 45 minutes!
